Il Giudizio Universale 1536-1541 - enlarge

"Il Giudizio Universale" (The Last Judgment), 1536-1541. Sistine Chapel, Vatican, Rome. The fresco covers the whole altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. It is a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity. The dead rise and descend to their fates, as judged by Christ who is surrounded by prominent saints. Michelangelo began working on it twenty-five years after having finished the chapel ceiling and was nearly 67 at its completion. It was commissioned by Pope Clement VII and completed under Pope Paul III.

Volta della Cappella Sistina 1508-1512 - enlarge

"Volta della Cappella Sistina" (Sistine Chapel ceiling), 1508 - 1512. Sistine Chapel, Vatican, Rome. The ceiling was commissioned by Pope Julius II. Central to the decoration are nine scenes from the Book of Genesis, of which The Creation of Adam is the best known.

Creazione di Adamo 1508-1512 - enlarge

"Creazione di Adamo" (The Creation of Adam), 1508-1512. Sistine Chapel, Vatican, Rome. A panel detail of the ceiling. The fresco illustrates the biblical creation narrative from the Book of Genesis in which God gives life to Adam. Michelangelo's main source of inspiration may have been a cameo showing a nude Augustus Caesar riding sidesaddle on a capricorn. Originally owned by the artist's contemporary and (allegedly) friend Cardinal Domenico Grimani, the cameo is now at Alnwick Castle, Northumberland.
